Conventions and Paradigms of Thrillers:
Thriller films use excitement and suspense as a means of entertaining the viewers. They aim to keep the audience alert and feel on edge.
The excitement often occurs when the main character is placed in a difficult, tense situation.
The genre also relies heavily on the use of sound to emphasise what is happening on screen. It often builds up until it reaches a crescendo to help amplify the suspense. This clip helps to illustrate this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQHfoz9Be7U
Thriller films also use conventional characters. A protagonist and antagonist are used in many thriller films and the protagonist often has to overcome a problem.
Other conventional features of thriller films include plot twists. An unexpected and unpredictable storyline helps keep the audience on edge. Examples of this include se7en and Memento.
History of Thrillers
Thrillers have been a major film genre for almost 90 years - one of the most memorable was the German film 'M' which told the story of the child killer.
Alfred Hitchcock was one of the most influential figures in the thriller genre. His films helped to shape how modern thrillers are made today with films such as vertigo and psycho.
In the modern day, thrillers such as jaws and se7en use special effects to create gore - again it makes the film more uncomfortable for the viewer to watch.
